Lydford Lamp Base – 3D Model

Maya | Arnold | Custom Shader

The Lydford lamp base was digitally recreated in Autodesk Maya using a real-world reference photograph, with a strong focus on capturing the organic, handmade quality of the original ceramic form. The design features a softly asymmetrical, stone-like silhouette that gives the base its distinctive character and tactile presence.

Unlike the more structured pieces in this series, this base was intentionally developed to feel imperfect and unique. Subtle variation in curvature, gentle surface irregularities, and softened edges were introduced to reflect the natural inconsistencies of hand-shaped ceramic, helping the model avoid a manufactured or overly procedural appearance.

A custom Arnold shader was created to simulate a matte, lightly textured ceramic finish, with fine surface noise and controlled roughness variation used to enhance realism and convey the feel of hand-worked material. The shader responds softly to light, allowing the form’s natural contours and imperfections to define its personality.

This piece was one of the most enjoyable to create, offering creative freedom to explore organic modelling and break away from rigid symmetry while still maintaining product-level believability.

Key Focus:
-Handcrafted aesthetic with intentional surface variation
-Organic silhouette and natural imperfection
-Clean yet expressive modelling in Maya
-Custom matte ceramic shader in Arnold
-Emphasis on individuality and character
