Black Bamboo – Material

Maya | Arnold | Custom Shader
Rockett St George for Next

Black Bamboo is a digitally recreated velvet fabric material developed for Next, based on the Rockett St George design and intended for application on upholstered furniture, including sofas. The material features a striking botanical bamboo motif set against a deep, richly toned base, designed as a large-scale repeat pattern that required precise digital construction to ensure seamless tiling and consistent visual flow across substantial surface areas.

The pattern was built from the ground up to maintain accurate spacing, alignment, and repeat integrity, allowing it to function effectively on large furniture forms without visible repetition artefacts or distortion.

A complex custom Arnold shader was developed to achieve the tactile realism of velvet, carefully balancing anisotropic highlights, soft fibre diffusion, and subtle directional sheen. This allowed the material to respond dynamically to light, capturing the characteristic light-catching behaviour and tonal depth that define premium velvet fabrics.

The shader was tuned to preserve both the sharpness of the graphic design and the softness of the textile surface, ensuring the material feels luxurious while remaining physically believable in interior visualisation contexts.

Key Focus:
-Large-scale repeat pattern construction
-Accurate digital recreation of Rockett St George fabric
-Advanced velvet shader development
-Directional sheen and realistic fibre response
-Fabric optimisation for upholstered furniture applications
