Lips Woven is a custom upholstery fabric created for Next, developed to accurately replicate a real-world texture for use across a range of 3D furniture visualisations.
The material began as a physical fabric sample, scanned using the XTex textile scanning system to capture the intricate weave structure, colour variation, and surface detail. The scan data was then refined and cleaned in Photoshop, where the pattern was carefully corrected, tiled, and colour-matched to ensure consistency across large furniture pieces while remaining faithful to the original fabric.
Particular attention was paid to scale accuracy, ensuring the woven lip motif matched its real-world dimensions and behaved naturally when applied across cushions, arms, and upholstery seams. The final material was developed and tested within Maya and Arnold, with adjustments made to the diffuse response, surface roughness, and fabric texture to achieve a realistic woven appearance under a variety of lighting conditions.
The result is a production-ready texture that balances visual accuracy with rendering efficiency, allowing the fabric to be showcased consistently across Next's furniture range while maintaining the character and detail of the original material sample.
