Faux Fur Upholstery – Shader-Based Fabric Material

This faux fur upholstery material was developed specifically for sofa applications, with a strong focus on scalability and production efficiency across multiple furniture assets. Rather than relying on geometry-based fur or model-specific grooming, the entire fur effect was achieved purely through the shader network, ensuring the material could be seamlessly applied to any model in the asset library without requiring bespoke modifications.
The primary challenge was recreating the soft, irregular depth and tactile variation of real fur while maintaining consistent performance across a wide range of shapes and topology types. This was accomplished through a carefully layered Arnold shader setup, utilising directional noise, procedural breakup, and advanced bump and normal map blending to simulate the appearance of dense fibres and compressed pile.
The shader was calibrated to respond naturally to light, producing subtle tonal shifts, surface variation, and soft shadowing that mimic the way fur catches and diffuses illumination. This ensured the fabric retained its plush, organic feel even when used on large-scale production environments and high-resolution product renders.
By avoiding geometry-driven fur, the material remains lightweight, flexible, and entirely consistent across all assets, making it ideal for pipeline-wide use in commercial interior visualisation.
